Section 01
Who this applies to
Worth knowing
This policy covers refunds backers receive from your campaign, not the service fees you pay Originn (those are in Fees & Pricing).
This Refund Policy applies to any founder running a pre-order campaign on Originn. It explains when backer refunds are triggered, how the automatic refund process works from your side, and what happens if a milestone is disputed.
If you are a backer looking for refund information, the user-facing Refund Policy applies to you instead. You will find it at originn.co.in/refund-policy.
Section 02
Your obligation as a verified founder
Worth knowing
Once verified, delivery on every milestone is non-negotiable. This is what backers are trusting.
When Originn verifies your startup and approves your campaign, two things happen at once. You gain access to the working capital backers are willing to put in. And you take on a hard commitment to deliver on every milestone you defined.
Verification is the platform telling backers that we have reviewed your team, your product, your timeline, and your delivery capacity, and that we believe in your ability to ship. Backers are not pre-ordering on faith alone, they are trusting our verification. The integrity of that verification depends entirely on whether the startups behind it deliver.
Plan your milestones honestly. If you are not sure you can hit a date, push it out before the campaign goes live. We would rather review and re-approve a more conservative plan than recover from a missed milestone after the fact.
If you anticipate missing a milestone, raise it with us at least seven business days before the deadline. There are paths forward, timeline extension, scope adjustment, founder-acknowledged late delivery with backer notice, that do not end in a campaign failure. The earlier you raise it, the more paths are open.
If a milestone genuinely cannot be met and no path forward is workable, backers are made whole in line with Section 04. The platform stands behind backers; the obligation to make that promise good is yours.
Section 03
When backer refunds are triggered
Missed milestones
Each campaign launches with a set of dated milestones that you defined and we verified. If a milestone is not met by its deadline plus a thirty-day grace period, the refund flow is triggered for backers of that campaign.
Campaigns you withdraw
You can withdraw a campaign at any time. When you do, the refund flow is triggered immediately. Backers are refunded within fourteen days.
Material misrepresentation
If we determine through verification or backer reports that your campaign materially misrepresented the product, the timeline, or your delivery capacity, we may trigger the refund flow and remove the campaign. We will tell you why and give you a chance to respond before we do this.
Mutual cancellation
You and an individual backer can agree to cancel that backer's order at any time, for example, if the backer's circumstances changed. Trigger this from your campaign dashboard; the backer is refunded within seven business days.
Section 04
How the refund flow works
Worth knowing
You do not action backer refunds yourself. The platform runs them; you receive notice and can review every transaction.
Backers are made whole
When the refund flow is triggered, every backer of the affected campaign receives a refund for the full amount they paid in, paid back to the original payment method. There are no partial refunds at the backer level. There is no math the backer needs to follow.
The mechanics happen on our side
How the platform makes backers whole is operationally complex, but it is not your problem to solve from your side. You see the trigger, you see the notice, and you can see every refund transaction in your campaign dashboard. We handle the rest.
Timing
Once the refund flow is triggered, processing begins within seven business days. Backers see the refund land in their original payment method per their bank's standard timelines (typically 5–10 business days after we send it).
Notice to you
You receive a notification at the moment the refund flow is triggered, with the trigger reason, the total amount, and the count of backers. We will also be in touch directly to discuss the situation and the path forward.
Section 05
Disputed milestones
If a milestone deadline is approaching and you believe you have met it but our verification team has not yet confirmed, raise a dispute from your campaign dashboard. The thirty-day grace period pauses while a dispute is open.
Evidence you can submit
- Production records (batch reports, factory acceptance documents)
- Shipping data (carrier records, tracking IDs, delivery confirmations)
- Independent verification (third-party audits, customer testimonials)
- Demonstration recordings of the milestone state
How we review
We respond to disputes within seven business days. Our verification team weighs the evidence against the original milestone definition. We may ask you for additional materials; you have ten business days to respond before the dispute is closed in favour of the existing verification status.
Outcomes
If we agree the milestone is met, it is marked verified and the disbursement proceeds on the normal schedule. If we agree it is not met, the grace period resumes from where it paused. Our decision on a disputed milestone is final for the purposes of this Policy, backers retain whatever statutory rights they have outside the Platform.
Section 06
Voluntary refunds
You can choose to refund a specific backer at any time, outside the triggers in Section 03, for example, if the backer's circumstances have changed, or if you have agreed individually with that backer that the order should not proceed. Trigger from your campaign dashboard; the backer receives the refund within seven business days.
There is no penalty for voluntary refunds, they are a normal part of running a campaign. They do not affect your verification status or your standing on the Platform.
Section 07
Tax and accounting implications
Refunds reverse the original transaction for tax purposes. Where GST was collected and paid, refunding the principal also reverses the corresponding GST. We surface the GST-adjusted figures in your campaign dashboard and in the monthly payout statement.
Treatment of refunded amounts as income or as reversal varies with your accounting method. This Policy does not give tax advice, please consult your accountant for the specific treatment in your books.
For founders with an active GST registration, we provide a quarterly statement of refund transactions that maps to standard GSTR-1 fields. This is a working document; it is not a substitute for filed returns.
Section 08
